Mr. Flynn is a nationally recognized commentator on Catholic and political affairs. He has been a life-long pro-life activist and is the President of Catholic Citizenship.
He is the recipient JFK Medal given by the Ancient Order of Hibernians, for his work towards peace and justice in Northern Ireland, Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem. Ray Flynn has also received the highest award of the Massachusetts Knights of Columbus. He received the John Boyle O’Reilly Award for commitment to social and economic justice, the Martin Luther King Award for dedication to human rights around the world, the Irish American Award for commitment to peace and justice in Northern Ireland, the American-Jewish Award, and the Saint Martin DePores Humanitarian Award and numerous honorary Doctorate Degrees.
Ray Flynn was an All-American basketball player at the Providence College Rhode Island. He was selected Most Valuable Player in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) during his senior year and was the last player cut from the then-World Champion Boston Celtics. Mr. Flynn served in the United States Army, and has been a teacher, probation officer and coach. Mr. Flynn began his democratic political career as a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1971 to 1979, representing the South Boston Irish neighborhood. He later served on the Boston City Council from 1978 to 1984, before successfully running for Mayor. In 1991, Ray Flynn captured every ward and precinct in the city, the first mayor ever to achieve this distinction. He left office, arguably, the most popular mayor in Boston history.
He and his wife, Catherine, have been married for forty years, have six children and eleven grandchildren
